Visit Us at the
Adriana Hess Audubon Center
Located at the Adriana Hess Wetland Park in University Place, WA, our center is tucked away off 27th and Bridgeport. It provides a convenient spot for a lunch break or quiet walk. Aided by a shelter, a picnic table, benches and a viewing platform over Morrison Pond, its perfect for little ones and those looking for an easy and short outdoor adventure. This public park is open from dawn until dusk daily. There is no fee for use. Per city law, all dogs must be kept on a leash.
Activities in the Park
Tahoma Audubon offers a wide range of activities at this small urban park. If you are looking to stay outdoors, you'll find an ADA-compliant trail that leads you through our demonstration backyard habitat area along the Donna Cooper Pepos Native Plant Trail. You will be surprised by the peaceful Morrison Pond - brimming with cattails, spirea and lily pads. You'll often see and hear Red-winged blackbirds, Violet green swallows, Buffleheads, and even the occasional Great blue heron perched high in a fir tree towering over the pond.
We offer a variety of outdoor activities year round including guided bird walks and native plant walks (both are free), volunteer opportunities to steward the park through habitat restoration work parties that include weeding, watering, plantings, trail maintenance, and wood chipping. Our man-made stream and pond along with bird feeders and nest boxes on site showcase how to attract birds to your own backyard. We are developing a composting education and demonstration area, too.
Activities at the Center
Staffed by friendly volunteer receptionists, the Center is open Mon-Sat from 10am - 1pm, but staff are usually available during regular business hours - just knock on the door! Inside the Center you'll find our staff offices along with our Nature Shop which includes a small bookstore, a lending library, and educational displays including bird specimens and nests. Pick up a copy of our latest newsletter, The Towhee or grab one of our free brochures for a self-guided plant walk or bird walk. We also have a small classroom where many activities are held. These include field trips, classes, volunteer activities and committee meetings. It is a great place to learn about birds, upcoming activities, summer camps, and volunteer opportunities, as well as joining or renewing your membership!
